Note for LiveJournal UsersYou must already be logged into LiveJournal, and have cookies enabled for this to work. If you are, simply enter your LJ URL ([your_username].livejournal.com) into the box above and this will log you in What is OpenID?OpenID is a distributed identity system. It was created to do away with having to create accounts on hundreds of different servers on the web, you just create one account and you use that to log into many different sites. Madhouse Beyond does not manage users, but if you want to access certain features like being able to comment on the blog, we need you to log in so that we know who you are. You can log into MHB with an OpenID account. How do I get an OpenID account?Simply go to an OpenID registrar and create an account there. Once you have a login URL, you will be able to log into Madhouse Beyond, and any other websites that accept OpenID logins. You can choose any registrar you like, some of the more popular ones are listed below
Once you have an OpenID account you can use it to log into any OpenID-enabled website, including this one. So OpenID is like Microsoft's Passport system? No! Passport is totally proprietary, and it relies on one company (Microsoft) for authentication and profile management. OpenID is truly decentralised... you can get accounts at any of the above-mentioned sites, and there are more springing up all the time. OpenID is specifically designed so the system doesn't collapse if one company goes out of business or turns evil. Aren't there data protection and privacy issues? Who knows my password? There are no data protection issues because no data is transferred. The only thing transferred between your OpenID server and the site you're logging into is a simple 'yes' or 'no'. All the authentication is handled by your OpenID server and they're the only ones who may know your password. Madhouse Beyond has no way of finding out, for example, your LiveJournal password if you use your LiveJournal account to log in here. I have a web site of my own, can I use my website's URL as my OpenID?Yes! There are two ways of doing this. The first is to run your own OpenID server (which is what I do) which means you can customise it how you like. For example, if you only ever log in from one computer you can restrict the logins to that one computer's IP address, for extra security. Information on OpenID server implementations in various programming languages can be found here. The other way is to set up an account on an OpenID registrar that supports delegation, such as LiveJournal. Then put an extra line in your website's <head> tag that points to the registrar. There's a description on how to do this here. Can I use my MySpace URL as my OpenID?No... because MySpace is shit. Why did MHB choose OpenID for user authentication?Various reasons. Firstly, we're as annoyed as anyone at having to register with 100 different accounts on as many different websites. The more websites that support OpenID the better things are, so we're doing our bit for the internet. Secondly, we don't handle any user authentication. We have certain users (mainly personal friends) who have higher priveledges than others, but we don't have to worry about authenticating them and we don't store any information on anyone, the OpenID server you choose to maintain your online personna does all that for us. We will never ask for your password, or any personal information... we just need to know your OpenID URL, and get an OK from your OpenID host that you are who you say you are (when you enter your URL above, your browser will redirect to your OpenID host, which will then authenticate you) and that's it, we then trust that you are who you say you are! It's that simple. I'm still confused!Put simply: to log into MHB, go to LiveJournal or Videntity and create an account there. Then enter your new URL into the box above to log into MHB. It couldn't be simpler! For more information on OpenID and how it works, check out OpenID.net, or for a more general description, read the OpenID entry on Wikipedia. So what do I get for logging in?Wait and see ;) |
